Modern Aging in Place Renovation in Falls Church, VA

Homeowner Challenge:

This 1950s ranch was renovated by the owner shortly after purchasing it in 1991, so it was time to again do some updating to allow for another 25 years of ownership. The project needed to address maintenance issues, upgrade building materials and adjust the layout. The homeowner wanted to stay true to the mid-century modern style of the home.

The BOWA Solution:

BOWA’s design team created a plan to make this home comfortable for the owner for years to come. To achieve the larger master suite the homeowner desired, an unused second bedroom was incorporated into the space. The master bathroom features a zero-threshold wet room with a large air jet tub and new skylight to allow more natural light. To help with long-term upkeep, special care was given to select high-quality, low-maintenance materials such as metal framed windows and new porcelain tile. The deck overlooking the lake was completely rebuilt, first floor full bathroom converted to a powder room, basement updated, and kitchen appliances and flooring upgraded. The interior and exterior colors were changed to a more modern pallet complementing the mid-century aesthetic.

Project Highlights:

  • Rebuilt screened-in porch
  • Windows, front door and garage door replaced with high-quality materials to match aesthetic
  • Exterior landscaping to enhance lake views
  • A durable product, Eco-Nomical cork flooring was installed in kitchen to reduce sound and add comfort
  • New roofing installed
