French Country Wine Cellar in Potomac, Maryland

Homeowner Challenge:

The homeowners envisioned a modern, state-of-the-art wine cellar with an ‘Old World’ charm and feel, similar to underground wine storage rooms found in east-central France.  They wanted the space to be comfortable yet large enough to entertain family and friends.

The BOWA Solution:

Complementing the style of their French Country home, the luxury remodeling contractor designed the cellar to feature four Carderock stone columns that support a double-barrel, vaulted Venetian plaster ceiling. The stone provides an historic feel and visual continuity with the entry and blends with the Vermont slate floor.  Three hand-built walnut wine storage units surround an ample seating area and the new space is ideal for hosting large wine-tasting gatherings as well as intimate dinners.

Project Highlights:

  • High-end Icynene spray foam insulation throughout to prevent wines from spoiling
  • Sophisticated HVAC system features humidity detectors and active monitoring with alarm to signal if cellar conditions move to unacceptable range
  • Low voltage lighting controls the quality and quantity of light inside the cellar, while the room’s insulated door is glazed to prevent unwanted light from spoiling the wine
